West District Alders met with sergeants at MPD’s West District, (attended by Alders Skidmore, McKinney, Clear and Kwasi Obeng, Council Chief of Staff) as an update on public safety topics in the southwest District. It was an interactive discussion with topics ranging from car thefts and the increase of violence in schools and the role of EROs (Education Resource Officers) to the strain on the Mental Health Officers and the number of hours it takes to sit with people in crisis in the ER before transporting them to the Winnebago Mental Health Hospital. Choke points include sitting with patients who refuse to provide blood or urine samples; waiting for patients and waiting for the private hospitals to make determinations about whether they will admit a patient prior to having them transported to Winnebago.
