If you would have told me 10-15 years ago that I would be making handmade items and actually SELLING them, I would have told you you were nuts! I was very career driven in the legal field and was not the “handmade” or “crafty” type. That changed as soon as my first child was born. Scrapbooking was what did it. After my second child was born, my husband and I took the plunge and I quit my day job to stay at home with my girls. That was the biggest eye opener for me. With money being tight, frilly little extras weren’t an option. But I still wanted to dress my girls in pretty stuff. I started thinking to myself “I can make that.” The first of many projects was jewelry. I loved all the children’s jewelry out there. So I bought a book and started creating. What started out as a hobby to dress my girls in pretty things soon turned into me making and selling my jewelry online.
As the girls got older and after my son was born, I felt a pull toward handmade clothing and bags (I have always been a sucker for bags). I bit the bullet and bought my first sewing machine. It sat there for a while unused. I will admit, I was a little scared of it. Then one day I took it out to sew on some appliques and I was hooked. I traded in my beads for fabric.
Can you do it? YES!! I am a self-taught seamstress who learned how to sew by trial and error. I also got lots of tips and instruction from books, emails with fellow seamstresses and googling. There were mess-ups. Lots. But practice makes perfect and you will soon find that the imperfections are what really make the project something special.
